The story behind this incredibly unique wood dates back hundreds of years to the pre-settlement southeastern US where vast forests of virgin long-leaf pine once grew across millions of acres, including our family farm. The ancient forests created a particularly unique ecosystem that is all but extinct today. From the time of European settlement the timber was prized for it's amazing strength and durability. During the industrial revolution long-leaf pine was sold throughout the eastern US and across the Caribbean, South America and Europe to build mills, factorys, and warehouses, etc.
The demand for this excellent building material was so great that by the 1920's the vast ancient forests were practically gone. There are only tiny pockets of old-growth long-leaf pine remaining today in preserves and on private land. The only way to acquire true antique heart pine is through the careful salvage of structures built before this valuable resource was exhausted. When you look at a piece of our antique heart-pine you are actually looking back in time hundreds of years. At Ohoopee Reclaimed we have spent nearly 25 years reclaiming and repurposing antique heart pine, giving new life to a truly unique part of our history.
